CityReach 2007

CityReach began in 2004 as a dream to get students participating in new church plants. Since its conception, there have been approximately 200 professions of faith, several rededications, several people announcing their call to the ministry, and several lives radically changed for Christ.

I connected with a college student today on Facebook who changed colleges, and his major, because God touched his life at CityReach. It simply blows me away how God uses 7 days of radical, missional, outreach to change lives. What would happen if we were radical for God all of the time?

This year's CityReach will take place in Loveland, Colorado. Check out the site and plan on attending!

I have to admit that I am a slacker. I was reading Kevin's blawg (as he likes to describe it) and he was promoting David's future project.

David is our Chief Musician/Worship Leader at StoneBridge. He's not only our worship leader, but he is our graphic designer, future web designer, and a small group leader. In my opinion, he is an amazing singer with the talent to make it to the Big Leagues!

If you are looking for someone worthy of support, please support his new album! With that being said, David, you can expect a donation from me...maybe a $1.00...just kidding!

Building Bridges

When we first moved to Morgantown we used the motto, "A Bridge To A Better Life."For some reason I was thinking about that the other day. In essence, what we were saying to a lost and dying world was, "Your life is not any good, try ours!"

For those of us who are Christians, we know that our life AC (after Christ) is a ton better than BC (before Christ), but trying to convey this to people without a relationship with Christ is like trying to sell Ocean Front Property in Arizona. For the most part, they just don't get it!

I told someone the other day that I sometimes feel like a "Used Church Salesman". "Try our church, we meet in a Theatre." "Try our church, we have Small Groups." "Try our church it is really friendly." "Try our church we are an authentic group of believers striving to carry out God's love to the people of Morgantown and the World." All of these things are TRUE, but what we need is a good dose of the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

Rick Warren said, "A church that is committed to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission will grow a Great church." I like that! We are striving to Build Bridges in our community. Lately, God has burdened me to reach a certain group of people on campus. I'm telling you that if God will reach a few of these students, it is possible for our church to turn the campus of West Virginia University upside down!

Congratulations To The Indianapolis Colts

I have to admit that I did not have a favorite in this year's Super Bowl, but had picked the Chicago Bears to win it all earlier in the season. So, with that being said, Congrats to the Colts, especially Tony Dungy, who is the first African American Coach to win the big game. Not only is he the first A.A. Coach, but he, and Lovie Smith are the first A.A. Christian Coaches to do it the Lord's way, and get it done. I have much respect for both coaches.

I love the fact that the Super Bowl turned more into a platform for Christians to share their faith than for the world to worship their football god on Sunday. Isn't this why God promotes Christians in the first place so that they can promote him? When I look at the world, it seems that no one gives reverence to God, but then, there are people like Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, and others who will not be swayed to turn to the left or the right. Praise God for people who share the wonderful message of Christ.

Waiting On The World To Change

Far too many churches (including StoneBridge) are waiting for the world to change, but we are not actively involved in changing the world. What changes the world? Is it a cold cup of water in Jesus name? Is it a hot cup of Joe on a cold wintry day?

The book of Acts begins with this verse, 1:1, "The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,"

A couple of the key factors are seen in this verse concerning changing the world. The way we change the world is by what we do and what we teach! Only Jesus Christ can truly change the world, but He has chosen people to carry out His plan. This plan is quite complex for most of us. I think the reason it is confusing is because we see other churches growing, and we wonder, "What's wrong with us? Why aren't we growing?" I am reminded of what Nelson Searcy said in his CD, Breaking the 65 Barrier. He said, "The question is not 'Why', but 'What'." What are we doing to break the church growth barriers? If we are not growing, it doesn't always mean that we are not doing, but we had better examine our schedules, our witness, our quality (in the worship service), and most of all our prayer lives. Prayer is the outlet that gives us the juice to do what we were called to do!

We must constantly remind people what God wants them to do, and if we are going to tell people what they are supposed to be doing, we had better be doing as well. We must be in the trenches with our soldiers. We must be willing to get our feet wet and our hands dirty. As Chris Farley used to say, "Who's with me?"

The Last Day Of January

Today was spent in Panera Bread discussing new ideas for ministry, plus making preparations for our Baptism service this coming Sunday. I am so stoked about baptizing Diane, Steven, and Christa. Last year, we had a total of two baptisms, so, with that being said, we are definitely striving to be more missional this year!

The first four messages of 2007 were:

Addicted to the Ministry.

Diving Lessons.

Developing a Persistent Prayer Life.

I had such a good time preaching this series. I believe God used it to challenge and convict our people. January was a good month for StoneBridge. I am looking forward to what God has in store for our church in 2007. Pray for us!

What if Michael Jordan would have quit playing basketball after being cut from the Varsity team his Sophomore year of High School?
What if Apple would have ceased making computers when Microsoft took off?
What if Jesus would have never drank the cup for us?

When I think of leadership, I think of the thousands of people who never gave up! They kept pressing forward, they continued to have innovative ideas when the world rejected them!

I received this poem several years ago, it is called:

Exciting Things Happening At StoneBridge

So far, So God! I believe Mark Batterson said that one time. So far, January has proven to be fruitful. God continues to bless us with people who are excited about following Jesus. The first Sunday in January, I preached a message on The Biblical Basis of Baptism. I felt like it was one of the best messages I had done in a long time. After the message, a young mother requested to be baptized. I was pumped! We had two baptisms the entire 2006 year.

Then, Russell called me to tell me that two (possibly three) college students wants to be baptized. Thank you, Lord. I have been so burdened about this need. I believe it is important for people who have professed Christ to make a public profession of their faith, by entering the waters of baptism. We have set a goal this year as a church to see 75 people saved and 24 baptized. Now, before I get hate mail (just kidding), I would love to see 75 people saved (if not more) and 75 people baptized, but the reality of this is not likely because each year we host a Sports Camp where several kids accept Christ. Most of these kids are either churched or have no church background. So, following up with these unchurched kids has not been productive even though we try to follow up with every person who accepts Christ as Savior.

The assimilation process of seeing people move from unchurched, saved, baptized, and a fully developing follower of Jesus Christ is difficult, and the reason I think it is difficult is because we make it difficult. We do not plan for growth. We do not remind people of what they are supposed to do. If we want to see people assimilated in our churches we must constantly remind people of what a disciple looks like. We must remind our people about the mission of the local church. It is to reach people, make more and better disciples who in turn will reach people and make more and better disciples.

One Year Anniversary

Our "Chief Musician", David Story, celebrated his one year anniversary with StoneBridge yesterday. We celebrated his arrival last night by watching the first half of the Colts game. The Colts were taking a good ole fashion whoopn' in the first half, so most everyone decided to head to the house.

I got home from the party, tucked the kids in bed, turned on the tube, and the Colts were tied with the Patriots 28-28. I couldn't believe it. After the Colts went ahead of the Patriots I got on the horn to call David. When he picked up his phone he yelled "Touchdown!" What an amazing comeback for the Colts. I am proud for David, Matt (another Hoosier in our church), and for Tony Dungy.

Reason One For Not Going To Texas

Last night, Russell and I got the opportunity to preach the gospel on the campus of West Virginia University. There were probably fifty people present to honor the life of Jason Simmons. I never had the opportunity to meet Jason, but according to a host of friends, he truly made an impact on a lot of people. It was a privilege to be a part of a candle light service to honor Jason's life.

I told those gathered last night many times we wonder why bad things happen to good people. The answer is not so simple, but what I told them was that God understands the future when we can not understand. He knows our pain, our hurts, and our sufferings. The only way we can find hope in the midst of our grief is to turn to Jesus Christ. I read John 14:1-6, Romans 8:18, and 1Thessalonians 4:13-18.

I am thankful for God allowing me this opportunity to minister to the people of Morgantown!

Disappointing

My family and I are supposed to be 30,000 feet in the air, right about now, but since Josiah and Jaden have been running fever, we decided to stay in North Central West Virginia.

Last Wednesday (January 10th), my son began running fever. We took him to the clinic in Westover to be told that he has a bad cold. So, things were still not good on Sunday, so we decided to take him back in to the Doctor. After a chest x-ray and his finger pricked, we were told that he had pneumonia. Dr. Mitchell gave him two shots in the legs and sent us home with antibiotics. So, the next day, Monday, we took Josiah back in for a check up. His blood count had come down and his fever seemed to be breaking. That's when Jaden started running fever and coughing.

Today, is Thursday, January 18, 2007. We were supposed to be flying to DFW today, but since our kids are still not feeling well, we had to make an important parental decision. Take our kids across country with fever, or lose $300.00. Obviously, you know what our decision was today.

I am disappointed that I will not be in Texas this week, but know that God has a purpose and a plan for every thing that takes place in our lives. I am looking forward to seeing God do something amazing in the coming days. God Bless!

Off To Texas Tomorrow

This winter has been crazy! The other day our high was 62 degrees. While it was 62 in Morgantown, Dallas, Texas temperature was 27 with freezing rain. What's this world coming to? =)

Tomorrow, my family and I will be flying to DFW. I was asked by one of my former students to officiate his wedding on Saturday. I am looking forward to visiting with old friends, family, and eating some Authentic Mexican Food. Please be in prayer for us as we travel.

A Change Of Plans

I woke up this morning with an entirely different message on my heart and mind. Instead of speaking on tithing, I have decided to talk about being addicted to the ministry. My thoughts, "If we will addict ourselves to God first, then whatever He wants us to do, we'll do it!" So, I am glad to know that God is directing this ship and not me. Have a great Lord's Day! =)

Go Deep Part 2

Tomorrow's message deals with the Biblical Basis for Tithing. Our church was amazing (in this area) in 2006. I am excited to see how God is going to use our church to go deeper in our finances.

I was reminded in the Scriptures that tithing began before the Law of Moses. Many people who are opposed to tithing believe that New Testament tithing is no longer of necessity. I disagree! Abraham gave a tenth of his spoils to Melchizedek. Many believe that Melchizedek was an appearance of the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He was the King of Salem and the priest of God Most High. This indicates that tithing was practiced by the patriarch, Abram, therefore, it should be practiced by God's children.

We must remember that we have been entrusted with our finances. We are stewards (managers of the resources God gives us). It is a privilege and a blessing to give to the Lord. It is an act of worship. It is an expression of gratitude for the manifold blessings God has bestowed upon us. Tithing should not be looked upon as a duty, but a privilege.

CityReach 2007

I just finished a conference call with the Board of Directors for CityReach 2007. CityReach Loveland will take place on June 8-15, 2007 in Loveland, Colorado. It is going to be another exciting week of ministry. There will be different ministry tracks for students and adults to participate in this year, such as: Car Wash, Sports Camp, Construction Ministry, C.O.P.S., and Vacation Bible School.

Chad Graves, Monticello, Arkansas is the guest speaker, and Two Copper Coins will be leading worship each night. The cost is $356.00.

What Does the Cost Cover?

The total registration cost ($356) covers all of your lodging for the week, which in most cases will be a college dorm room. The cost also covers meals for the week. The programming for the week is also covered in the cost, including guest speakers, worship leaders and bands that will be ministering to us in the evenings. The cost also covers the logistics and planning to make a CityReach project possible. The cost also includes necessary materials to run the various ministry tracks. The group outing is covered (i.e. Whitewater Rafting, National Park fees, Bowling, Recreation Facilities). Every participant will receive a CityReach T-shirt.

After One Week Of Going Deep

Last Sunday, I preached about the Biblical Basis of Baptism. I truly felt like the message flowed, and the people were engaged in what I was saying. I talked about the need for people who have accepted Christ as their Savior to follow Christ in baptism.

This past year we had two baptisms. Although, we rejoice in the two precious people that were saved and baptized, I am disappointed that our church did not baptize more people.

One of the reasons we did not baptize more people is because Russell and I did not address the people enough about this important doctrine. Now, we know that baptism doesn't save anyone, but what we do know is that it is very important if we want to grow in our relationship with Christ and the discipleship process! Not only that, but it is a prerequisite to church membership.

In the Bible, baptism was always done by immersion, and it always happened after a faith decision. I am excited that one person responded to the call to be baptized. On January 28, 2007, Diane will follow Christ in baptism!

Mom finally came home from the hospital yesterday after lunch. The Doctors told her that her heartbeat was irregular (causing chest pains, etc). Their plan is to keep her on the same medicine with the same doses.

Prayer For Mom

For those of you who read this blog, please say a prayer for my mother (Kentucky). I took her to Ft. Hamilton Hospital last night after the Buckeyes game. She was complaining of Chest Pains. I was at the hospital until 5:00 a.m.

The Cardiologist is supposed to examine her today, and figure out what they need to do next. Most likely, they will give her a stress test to see if the blockages in her heart have gotten worse. Thanks!

After an embarassing finish by the Buckeyes last night, the Florida Gators deserve to be #1. They kicked tail and took names! There are two things that this game taught us:

Ted Ginn is a huge part of the Buckeyes Offense.

Florida is really good! (DUH!)

A Wonderful Celebration

I celebrated my 34th birthday yesterday. First of all, it is amazing how fast time goes by. I can't believe I am 34! It seems just like yesterday I was running the roads, hoopn' at Armco Park, and getting into trouble. =)

Yesterday was spent preaching, eating, and traveling. Kristie, Mom, the kids, Nelson (my dog) and I loaded up the Explorer and headed to the Buckeye State. Mom has been visiting with us for about a week or so. It was good to have her in our home.

We had a good time visiting with the good folks of Inwood, West Virginia this weekend. They brought their Student Ministry to Morgantown to treat our kids to a puppet show. First Baptist Church of Inwood has invested their time, money, and resources to help our church plant move forward. I am very proud to have them as our sending church. They are the best sending church in the country! If I didn't believe that, I would look for another one. I appreciate Pastors Devin, Tim, Jim and Greg for their continual leadership!

Our First Date Of 2007

My mom has been visiting with us since last Friday night. We have truly enjoyed having her with us.

Tonight, Kristie and I took advantage of her being here. We went on our first date of 2007, and let me tell you we had a lot of fun. We went to the movies and watched Night in the Museum. It was awesome!

If you haven't seen this movie you ought to check it out. With names like Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson and a cast of others how could you miss it!

A Challenge To My Life Transformation Group

Yesterday's LTG lasted for 2 1/2 hours. I met with Steve and Ephraim for breakfast, prayer and Bible study. I challenged the guys to start thinking about multiplication (thanks, Noah). I told them that by April 1, 2007, I wanted our LTG to multiply. I asked the guys to start thinking about finding another person to do life with on Thursday mornings. The more people involved in LTG's and Small Groups the better accountability our church will have with one another. It's a God thing!

Go Deep

Sunday starts a new series for the 2007 Church Year! I have entitled this series Go Deep! The main idea behind the series is to get people thinking about baptism, discipleship, and fellowship within StoneBridge Baptist Church.

I am excited to see how God is going to use this series of messages to impact the lives of people. I am excited to share with people the need to Go Deep with God.

So far (like most years), I have started the year out strong in my Bible reading. One of the things I am doing is reading three to four chapters a day in the New Testament. If I will continue this, I will be finished with the New Testament by the end of 90 days. This is exciting. I thank God for the New Year, because it gives me a fresh start at going deeper with the Lord.

If you have not started your daily Bible reading, I want to encourage you to find time each day to read three or four chapters. It really isn't that hard to do. It takes about 17-20 minutes per day. Come on, YOU CAN DO IT!

If you are an audio learner, you can go to Audio Bible to listen to Alexander Scourby read the entire Bible.

Whatever you do, do it all for the glory and honor of Christ. Peace!

The Mountaineers Are For Real

Last night I got the opportunity to watch the Mountaineers play Villanova. Frank Young tied a school record hitting 8 three pointers. It was awesome! At one time the Mountaineers had a 22 point lead over the Wildcats. This team is for real!

Joe Alexander came to CityReach this past Summer to help with our Sports Camp. He is a great guy. Ever since June, I have been meeting with Joe. He has been telling me that this team is for real, but I haven't had the chance to see them play until last night. I am thankful for his friendship. He ended the game with 16 points.

BTW, I bought Joe's #11 Jersey last night! It is sweet!

Sometimes I Just Don't Think

Kristie, the kids, and I went for a walk tonight. After our walk, I decided to start a fire in my new portable fire pit. I was excited! Then, after tons of smoke from wet straw and wood, I knew the fire wasn't going to amount to much.

So, I got all smokey and nasty for naught. I jumped in the shower so I wouldn't be reeking of smoke as I make my way to the Colosseum to watch the Mountaineers take on Villanova. It should be lots of fun!

I am looking forward to watching my boy, Joe Alexander put on a Dunk Fest! =)

My Story

Mark Batterson inspired me to print out my 2006 Blog entries. After about an hour's worth of printing, I had 144 pages of entries, compared to Mark's 400.

Back in the Spring of 2006, I became intrigued by the concept of blogging after reading a fellow pastor's blog. I loved his stories, authenticity, and love for Christ. So, I thought I would begin my journey in the blogosphere. I am thankful to be a part of the blog world. I feel so inadequate (when it comes to writing), because (as Napoleon Dynamite would say) "I don't have any skills." =)

Taking a look at these entries, I am reminded that my life is telling a story. In Acts 3:19 the Bible says, "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord" I love this verse for several reasons, but the main reason I love this verse is because of the words "blotted out". In Bible days, ink did not have acid in it. So, when people wrote on the parchments, it could easily be wiped away so that they could start afresh.

Here's the application: When we repent of our sins, God gives us a new page. We have a fresh start on life. I am thankful for God's forgiveness in my life. I pray that as people read my story that somewhere they would get a glimpse of Christ. God Bless you all, and Happy New Year!

Let's Go Mountaineers

Special thanks to Russell and Belinda for a great day! My family and I enjoyed visiting with the Knights and the Johnsons today. We kicked back, ate, and watched the Mountaineers come back to beat Georgia Tech, 38-35 (without Steve Slaton).

This Mountaineer team has been fun to watch this season. I have enjoyed seeing Pat White, Steve Slaton, Owen Schmitt, Brandon Myles, Marc Magro, Jay Henry, Eric Wicks, and Pat McAfee do what they do on the field.

Even though this season is over, I am looking forward to the 2007 Season. It is going to be off the chain!

Eleven Sweet Years

Today is my Anniversary! I am thankful for my beautiful, godly woman. She is a great daughter, wife, and (let me say) an awesome mother.

We celebrate our 11th Anniversary today! We are going to celebrate tonight with dinner and a movie. My mother, brother, sister-in-law, nephews and niece are in from Ohio. So, we are going to enjoy the night out (thanks, Mom!)

Kristie and I have not had a true date in a long time. I am looking forward to our evening out. Also, one of my personal goals for the up-coming year is to have a date night every other week. I believe it is important that we make time for our spouses. I am thankful that God sent her to me. She has been a blessing in my life and ministry. State Of The Church Address

Thanks to the people of Wikipedia: The State of the Union Address is an annual event in which the President of the United States reports on the status of the country, normally to a joint session of the U.S. Congress (the House of Representatives and the Senate). The address is also used to outline the President's legislative proposals for the upcoming year. It has occurred in January except for six occasions in February since 1934. The 2006 address took place on January 31.

This coming Sunday I have entitled my message: The State of the Church Address. I want to report on the status of StoneBridge and give a brief overview of where we are going in 2007. It is my prayer that God would direct my thoughts this week as I prepare for this message and try to relay to our people the vision God has given to our church. We have had a great year. God has blessed our numbers. We have averaged in the fifties and sixties since July, and have been breaking monthly financial averages. God is good!

One thing I envision for 2007 is for our church to make more and better disciples. I am burdened about the number of people who have not been baptized and discipled through our efforts at StoneBridge. I believe we have done a decent job of getting people to come and see, but making disciples has been a weak point for us. I pray for God to multiply our Small Groups, LTGs, and Baptisms. I have even been thinking about the possibility of starting another service in August 2007. With these dreams comes laborers. We will need our people to take more responsibility in 2007. They are awesome people, and I know they are up for the challenge.

Playing In The Snow

Exciting Things For 2007

This week I have been working on personal goals, church goals, and my sermon series for the up-coming year. I am excited!

I have encouraged Russell and David to write some personal and church goals for 2007, as well. I am looking forward to seeing God bring our thoughts together as we strive to reach this city for Christ.

Morgantown continues to be an exciting city to live in. Since 2003, we have seen exponential growth. We have been placed here "for such a time as this."

Our Vision verse for StoneBridge has been 1 Thessalonians 1:8, "For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing."

It is our desire that StoneBridge Baptist Church sounds out the Word of the Lord not only in Morgantown, and the I-79 Corridor, but also in every place where people need to hear the Word of God.

One of the things I would like to see accomplished in 2007 is our Small Groups Ministry to multiply from 5 to 8. To accomplish this goal we will need more leaders to emerge and more people to open their homes to host these groups. I have the utmost confidence in our people, in God, and our vision to accomplish this goal. It is one thing to have dreams, it is another to see your dreams come to fruition.

Last night after playing some round ball, I received opportunity to pray with three other men. It was refreshing!

One of the men (who attends StoneBridge) is a new Christian. God has been working in his life for the past several months. In his prayer last night, he related life to playing Basketball. It was an awesome prayer! He started out by saying, "Dear God, you know I'm not very good at this, but I want to try to make an analogy in my prayer." He continued, "Life is a lot like playing basketball. The first quarter, I didn't do to well. The second quarter, I did a little bit better, but I was still struggling. Now, it's half time, God, and you are the Coach. Help me to listen to your instructions, and help me run the plays which You have designed for me. I hope I can have a better 3rd and 4th Quarter. In Jesus name I pray, Amen."

When I think about that prayer, I am stand amazed at what God can do with people. You know, I have had some pretty rough quarters myself. It is only when I listen to my Coach (Jesus) that I have an outstanding game. It is my prayer that we will all finish strong. Whatever struggles you may be facing, Coach has the answers.

Today (feeling a little Spiritually down), I met an elderly couple named Bob and Herod. Yes, her name is Herod. Isn't that amazing? After speaking with them for a little while, I found out that they attend a Baptist Church in Reedsville, WV. They are a sweet couple! They asked where I Pastor, and I told them StoneBridge Baptist Church. They said, "Oh yeah, your church washed our vehicle (during CityReach)." She continued, "We've been talking about attending your church during the wintry months." I told them that would be great!

Then, I normally talk with a Mail Carrier each time he is in Panera. His name is Dave. He is a Sunday School teacher at a Baptist Church in Reedsville, WV. The encouragement I received today from these folks was amazing. I am thankful for the Family of God!

Living in a college town has its pros and cons. The pros are: a young, vibrant, excited church. The cons are: this young, vibrant, excited church sometimes moves away.

Chris and Veda B. have been attending our church since March of 2004.

Recently, Chris accepted a job in Roanoke, Virginia. I will miss their warm smiles, laid back attitudes, genuine hospitality and love for Christ. These two folks will be deeply missed!

As a matter of fact, I haven't been too sentimental over their move until I started this blog entry. Kristie and I had a great time visiting with them today. I went to Ethan's (their oldest son) Christmas Program, then, we went to the Olive Garden for lunch.

I know that we will never replace them, but, I do pray for God to send us more willing workers like Chris and Veda. Guys, I love you, and I am thankful for the eternal friendship we have developed over the past (almost) three years. God bless you!

Someone Brought A 12 Gauge Shotgun And An IPOD To Church!

Can you believe it? Someone brought a 12 Gauge Shotgun and an Ipod to our church yesterday!

David opened up the service by saying, "This is going to be a little different service than usual. Today, we want to honor our pastors." He continued, "Two years ago, I received a call from a guy with an East Texas accent who wanted me to transfer schools. I thought, who does this guy think he is! Well, it has been almost a year now since I moved from Fairmount, Indiana to Morgantown, West Virginia. We are all here today, because the Sheffstalls and the Knights were willing to move from Texas to West Virgina."

After David's comments, several people in our church stood up and graced us with kind words. I love this place! After everyone was finished speaking, they encouraged us to come forward to receive gifts. I received an IPOD (Yahoo, Yipee...hooray) and Russell received a 12 Gauge Shotgun.

It only gets better. Not only did they grace us with words, give gifts to men, but they gathered around us to pray.

I thank God for the privilege of pastoring this church! Thank you Lord for all of your blessings!!!

Quick Trip To Inwood, WV

Russell and I made a quick trip to our sending church yesterday. We were blessed with warm hospitality, good fellowship, and some of the best Pizza Hut pizza that I have eaten in a long time.

I appreciate Dan and Pat D. from Inwood for hosting Russell, the Johnson's, and myself in their home. We had a great time visiting the church, then just hanging out after church. I am so thankful for First Baptist Church of Inwood. Their willingness to help us start a church planting movement in the I-79 Corridor is awesome. I am so appreciative of their generosity, prayers, and financial support.

One part of the StoneBridge vision is to see a multiplicity of churches in the I-79 Corridor. Our prayer is for God to raise up church planters (within our church), and throughout our Association of Churches. God is working in a great way!

Four More Sundays

We have four more Sundays in 2006 to impact lives. What will we say to influence people to move from the stands to the playing field? How will God use His message to convict, convince, and encourage us to do more for Him in 2007?

What will God do through His churches in order for our communities to take notice? Mark Batterson said, "The Good news ought to make the news."

I talked with a friend of mine today who is a pastor in Arkansas. One of the things his church is doing to make the news is an Absolutely Free Gift Wrapping Service at the local Mall. I thought that was a great way for his church to serve their community and honor Christ. I truly believe that if our churches are going to make a difference we must show Christ through our actions, and then, we'll be blessed with opportunities to share Christ.

I'm looking forward to getting back in the saddle on Sunday. I will finish the Y Series with a message on Y-Church. Y Church will deal with the benefits of connecting with a local church. The Biblical text comes from Acts 2:41-47.

I can not speak for my readers, but I am thankful for the Lord's churches. When we connect to the local church, we are not just connecting to an organization, we are connecting to a family of like-minded believers who desire to sincerely worship the Lord and carry out His work!

Joining this family of believers is a privilege and honor. It is important for the leaders of the churches to challenge people to take their position in the family seriously. I have been listening to Nelson Searcy's seminar on Assimilation. One of the things he encouraged leaders to implement was the power of mobilization. He called it, "The Power of the Big Ask!" In other words, if we don't ask people to get involved in ministry, they probably will not.

Her REAL NAME is Kentucky! She doesn't like chicken, and her favorite meat is Pork chops. She is a giver, lover, and servant.

She loves her kids and grand kids, and has recently lost 13 lbs doing Weight Watchers.

Blue Moosin'

I usually do not office at the Blue Moose, but since I was already downtown, I decided to place my $1.50 in the parking meter, and sip on a cup of Java while I worked.

The Moose was Russell's Hot Spot, but he has been working at Panera for the past couple of months. Honestly, I do not fit in at the Moose. The majority of the people who visit the Moose are college students, artists, and middle aged men wearing Kangol Hats. Now, I am not against these people (I actually like the look of the Kangol), but the main reason for my boycott is the, the,...are you ready for this? Well, it's because I can't stand paying for downtown parking! OK, I said it! :)

When it comes to giving money away, I would much rather my $1.50 go toward a cup of Joe, than a hungry parking meter screaming, "Feed Me, Seymour!" As a matter of fact, my time is about up...I guess I'll go feed it another quarter.

Do We Care?

Monday nights are usually filled with a little Round Ball at Morgantown Bible Church. I always have a great time exercising and hoopn' with the guys. We have a good group of men who are always Christian, but yet, very competitive.

We had a total of sixteen people present tonight. Each week (before we play), I take the opportunity to pray and share the gospel with these men. Most of these men have professed Christ as Savior, and attend Chestnut Ridge Church.

There are times when we have new players who attend, who have no meaningful relationship with a church, or Christ.

I met a man tonight who shared with me that he is not a believer. He told me that he has a hard time believing that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He seemed like a good guy, but my heart broke as I listened to him. I did not get to finish the conversation because the next game was about to start, but my mind has been on this fella tonight. My prayer is for God to be real to this man so that he would submit himself to the Christ, the Son of the Living God!

We have had our share of problems as of late. I know, I know, we haven't been thrown in prison, stoned, or left for dead, but we have had our share of misfortunes. My Explorer has been in the shop since November 17th. I finally got it back today with a new transmission, and the rear differential repaired. After $_ _ _ _._ _ we are back in business.

Now, that's not all. This afternoon Kristie was washing some clothes...when our entire laundry room was filled with water. Guess what? We are about to purchase a new Washing Machine. Thank God, and Lowes for no payments and no interest until January 2008!

Now, it may sound as if I am moping or complaining, but I am really not. I am thankful to have a car, and I am thankful to have clothes that need to be washed. I do rejoice in God for His blessings.

The December Calendar

I can't believe how fast this year has gone by. Russell and I sat down this morning planning for the up-coming month and new year. December will begin with Russell and me finishing up our Y-Series! His message will center around Y-Give, and I will finish the series with Y-Church.

This will take us two weeks into December, leaving us with three more Sundays in 2006 to impact our community of believers.

Looking back on the year, I am amazed at the giant leaps of faith we have taken as a church. Since the beginning of the year, we have called a worship leader (David Story), multiplied our Small Groups (from two to five), began numerous Life Transformation Groups, and have reached our monthly financial goals every month, except for one. Another exciting statistic is that we have averaged in the fifties and sixties since July! This past month, we averaged 61 people for the month, with an all time high (on our own) of 101 people.

We realize that we have a lot of work left to do. There are still plenty of people in Morgantown, and the world who are not yet fully developing followers of Jesus Christ. Russell and I discussed our inadequacies, and our desire to do a better job in 2007. One of the things we are going to do is plan our 2007 Calendar year. We hope to have our Sermon Series for 07' in the bag and ready to go. We want God to use our church in a greater, and more abundant way in the up-coming year.

Connecting Through Small Groups

Tonight's gathering was amazing! I enjoyed gathering with my family, and all of my StoneBridge friends. We had a wonderful meal (Spaghetti, Salad, Garlic Bread and Desserts).

The most important reason for our gathering was to pray and study God's Word. We looked at Isaiah 55. Isaiah 55 begins with an invitation for people to "Come" to God. The wonderful thing about God's invitation is that it is extended to all people, the rich, the poor, the middle class...all people.

Another good thing about this invitation is that it is offered to you freely, but came with a high price.

I Peter 1:17-20, "17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God."

I've noticed that my entries (as of late) have been all relating to either the Mountaineers, Buckeyes, or something other than my relationship with Christ. I have had a good time writing about these things, but it is my relationship with Christ that is the most important thing in my life. I am thankful to God for His invitation to be a part of his Kingdom work. It is an honor and a privilege to be called a child of the King!

We tried to get the Christmas lights up last night, but the darkness came before the work could be finished.

Decorating for Christmas is always a hassle for me (Bah, humbug), but when we finish I am always glad that I partook.

My neighbors have had their lights up for about a month. I guess they are anxious for Christmas to come. You know, it might not be a bad idea to just leave Christmas lights up year round since it comes around so fast.

"Are you going?" Those were the words I heard at 4:55 this morning. Kristie and I were up late last night going through Sales Ads for the Day after Thanksgiving Sales.

We went to the Big Box Mart (look for Big Box Mart Icon), Target, Best Buy (stood outside for about 2 or 3 minutes, then left) Home Depot, Kohls, Elder-Beerman, Meijers, and Lowes. We finished the morning off with two Sausage Biscuits, two Hash browns, Breakfast Burrito, and a Hot Cakes and Sausage meal from Mickey D's.

It felt good to go shopping with Kristie without the kids. Mom was ready, and willing to watch Josiah and Jaden this morning. I am so thankful to be around my family. It's been fun!

Just thought I would share a few thoughts about my experience this morning.

After Thanksgiving Sales are a lot more fun than I thought.

Most guys hate shopping, but today's experience was not shopping, it was hunting!

Everyone loves a good deal!

Most people get caught in the moment of the deal instead of rationalizing their purchase.

As a whole, we are very greedy!

Wal-mart makes a statement: Respect for the Individual and Corporate Contributions .

I have heard through the grapevine that Wal-mart received over 100,000 emails from Conservatives displaying their disapproval of their recent partnership with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

I did not send Wal-mart an email of my disapproval, but I did send them an email thanking them for remaining neutral in the cultural wars.

American Family Assosciation reported that Wal-mart would be donating 5% of their online sales to the National & Gay Lesbian Chamber of Commerce during the Friday and Saturday Super Sales following Thanksgiving.

I missed seeing everyone at StoneBridge yesterday. I enjoyed attending my home church in Overpeck, Ohio, but I guarantee you, there is no place like StoneBridge!

Russ, thanks for preaching God's Word. I am so thankful to work with a Staff of people that will get the job done, even when I am away. As a matter of fact, the local church does not depend on a pastor, it depends on a group of like-minded people who have gathered together to hear, and do the Word of God.

One part of the StoneBridge Vision is to meet the needs of this generation and the generations that follow. We do not want our church to grow and prosper for our benefit alone, but for our kids and grand-kids, as well.

We understand that none of this will take place without the aid of the Holy Spirit and the work of God's people. It is important that we never forget the reason we exist, The Great Commission! It is our duty and privilege to make more and better disciples of Jesus Christ.

I was listening to Nelson Searcy's Breaking the 65 Barrier the other day, when I heard something profound. He said, "Pastor, do you have a vision for your church?" He went on to say, "It's not necessarily the "thing" written on paper, but the benefits of the vision." In other words, when you cast your vision, are you telling people the "why" of the vision? God has not only placed a vision in your heart (but with that vision), He has placed the benefits of the vision.

How About Them Buckeyes

Buckeyes win! The Buckeyes end their regular season 12-0, beating Michigan 42-39. University of Cincinnati beat Rutgers 30-11, and Arkansas beat Mississippi State 28-14.

Now, you would think with an Entry Title called "How About Them Buckeyes" that this entry would be about the Buckeyes...but it is not. This entry is about the Razorbacks. You see, the Razorbacks beat Mississippi State 28-14, but all this talk about Arkansas made me take a peek back into history. The day was October 7, 2006. The Mountaineers traveled to Mississippi to do battle with MSU, but to be honest, it wasn't much of a battle. The Mountaineers beat MSU 42-14! So, what this means is that if the Mountaineers play Arkansas, West Virginia will have a 14 point advantage.

Hey, Scott I sure do hope the Mountaineers will face the Hawgs. My Mountaineer friend, Brady Campbell is getting his Rifle ready to go hunting! Hope you have a great Sunday!

Having Kids Changes Everything

I am sure many of you have heard Johnson and Johnson's advertising campaign slogan, "Having a Baby changes everything." I can definitely concur!

Yesterday, about 1:45 p.m., we got in the car and headed for the state of Ohio. After many stops, we finally arrived in Hamilton about 11:00 p.m. The kids were absolutely worn out, along with two weary parents. Note: This is usually a 5 1/2 to 6 hour trip.

I am very thankful to God for my two special blessings (Josiah and Jaden), but they definitely try my patience. This morning, Josiah woke up at 5:00 a.m. He and Mamaw were having a great time together. He was so wound up!

I thought that I would share with you several things I try to do when the kids wig me out! Here are several tips which I have learned concerning discipline.

Take a deep breath.

Count to ten.

Apply Proverbs 29:15, when necessary.

Remove Privileges.

Place child in a "Naughty Corner."

Be Consistent (Say what you mean, and mean what you say.)

Always explain what you are doing, and why you are doing it.

Always discipline in love.

Always give hugs and kisses after applying Proverbs 29:15.

Game Of The Week

Today's game may be the biggest game in the history of both of these Big 10 teams. With Bo Schembechler passing away yesterday, the Wolverines will be Chopin' at the bits!

As most of you know, I am from Southwestern Ohio. I was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio, moved to Texas when I was twenty, and West Virginia when I was thirty.

I am excited to be in my home state this weekend to watch the Buckeyes play for another opportunity at the National Championship. Okay...So, I started trimming my hair the other day because I was tired of looking at the uneven top which my barber had left the last time at her shop. I was trimming away, when I noticed my sideburns were thicker than I enjoy. So, being the good Barber that I am (hehehe) I decided to take the guard off the clippers (Big Mistake). As I was hearing the sound of the clippers, I could see the hair falling to the ground.

Now, I am not usually one for buzz cuts, but after seeing the funky looking Mohawk, I decided that a buzz cut would look much better than an 80's Mohawk. Imagine that!

I am enjoying the low maintenance (Johnny J.), the slick look =), and my son rubbing my head saying, "I like your Pappy Hair." BTW, Josiah would love to have a buzz cut, but Kristie will not comply.

Tracking New Guests

Yesterday's services were top shelf. We had several Courtesy Visits (People who are members at other churches), but overall, the attendance was up again. We had 79 people in attendance with several new college students and a new family of four.

Since our church's conception we have always used communication cards to track our guests. Lately, this has not been too effective. Russell and I have been trying to re-think our strategy on tracking new guests. Should we buy a Guest Book? Should we grab our guests by the collar and make them fill out a card? or Should we offer new cars for every new person in attendance?

Seriously though, we have wondered what the most effective way to track new guests. If you have any suggestions, please comment below. Thanks.

Part Of The Vision

Manny J. is a part of the StoneBridge Vision. It is our desire and prayer to God, to train, teach, and encourage people to become "fully developing followers of Jesus Christ."

When we moved to Morgantown, WV three years ago, we knew God was going to use our church to develop men to become future Pastors and Church Planters. So far, there have been several men who have announced their call to the ministry. Some have left our church, while others have dove right in, knowing that one day they will become a part of something significant for the glory of God.

I have been working with Manny for the past several days on his message for Sunday. He is going to do a great job! His message will be taken from Luke 16:19-31. He has entitled the message, The Richest Man In Town.

There are two main points that Manny wants to express:

People Need Jesus.
People Need to Share Jesus.

As a pastor, I don't think there is anything greater to preach about than this.
